Thotupola Kanda


Thotupola Kanda is also referred to as the Thotupola Peak by the natives. The peak is a part of the Horton Plains National Park. The legend of Lord Rama and Ravana describes this peak as Ravana’s landing site when he kidnapped Sita, Lord Rama’s wife.

Thotupola Kanda, also sometimes referred as the Thotupola Peak or Thotupola Mountain, is the third highest mountain is Sri Lanka situated in Nuwara Eliya district 2,357 meters above mean sea level. Mountain is placed within the Horton Plains National Park About two kilometers long trail is there to the top of the mountain that starts few meters away from the Pattipola entrance to the Horton Plains National Park. Most part of the mountain surface is covered with shrubs adapted to the cool and windy climate of.

There is another meaning for this mountain in Sinhala language that is “Thotupola” which used to land or park something. As per the legend of Rama Rawana there’s a belief that when King Rawana kidnapped Sita and taking her to the castle, his Air Plane; “Dandu Monaraya” landed on the top of this mountain.
